Cagayancillo: A Hidden Paradise in Palawan

The municipality of Cagayancillo is a remote island and farthest provincial limit of the province of Palawan in the east. It lies between mainland Palawan and the island of Negros, concealed in the immensity of the Sulu Sea.

    Cagayancillo Palawan

Cagayancillo is also the smallest municipality in the province of Palawan. It has 30 islets and one main island where more than 7,000 people reside. It is the closest settlement and holds political jurisdiction over Tubbataha National Marine Reef, a popular diving spot and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

    What to see

Apart from the beautiful shores of the island, the Cagayancillo Fort, a defense fort built during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines, is one of the island's main attractions. Its construction started in the late 16th century but was only completed in the early 18th century.

The Tubbataha National Marine Reef is another must-see attraction in Cagayancillo. These majestic chain of corals encompass an astonishing diversity of marine life and is recognized as one of the most beautiful beautiful dive sites in the world.

    Getting to Cagayancillo

The cheapest to go to Cagayancillo is by boat. Hire someone who has a boat to take you to the island. It is a note worth taking though that going to Cagayancillo is no easy feat. One must brave the treacherous waters of the Sulu Sea for hours. However, the powdery white sand; clear, emerald water; and the lush stretch of trees growing in its sandy loam soil, will compel you that the long trip is worth your while.

PS: You can ignore the beauty of the island and the surrounding islets, but it is a battle you won't win.
