    Cuyo Island: Palawan's Oldest Town

The town of Cuyo is the oldest town in Palawan. It was established in 1662 and became Palawan's second capital from 1873 to 1903. Its unique culture as well as Spanish colonial architectures which are evident in the town's church and heritage houses has been preserved for more than 300 years.

Cuyo lies between mainland Palawan and the island of Panay in the vastness of Sulu Sea. To its south is the town of Cagayancillo where Tubbataha reefs are found. To its north is the exclusive and luxurious Pamalican Island's Amanpulo Resort.

There are many beautiful sights in Cuyo. Many of its beaches and islets designed by waves and strong winds are still untouched. And just like the Eiffel Tower is to France, Cuyo has the Spanish fort as the town's famous landmark. It was built in 1667 to protect the people from the Moro pirates.

During the months of December to March strong northeast winds blow continuously over the island, making it a popular place for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The howling sound of the waves and the soft, heavenly hum of the wind create a perfect sound that soothes the body and mind.

Visiting Cuyo may posses a challenge to some as it requires a ferry ride of 18 hours or more. But it has a distinct and enticing appeal that makes it unique. The beaches are beautiful too. People are honest and live a simple life of peace. If you are thinking of exploring Palawan, include Cuyo in your itinerary. You won't be disappointed!
